About ACMN - Formation of the College

ACMN (Australasian College of Medical Nutrition) is a not-for-profit college formed to help train doctors and Practice Nurses in Injectable Nutrition. Its formation resulted from a void in the marketplace due to a significant reduction in training in this area.

Management of Vitamin D Deficiency

An excellent review published in 2010 in the BMJ (i) gives a current overview of the diagnosis and management of vitamin D deficiency in the UK .

Note: Where “calciferol” is mentioned the recommended form of Vitamin D is CHOLECALCIFEROL.

Overview in the UK:

Effect of B-Vitamin Therapy on Progression of Diabetic Nephropathy: A Randomized Controlled Trial

A recent report AGAIN in JAMA (i) has highlighted a potential problem with very high dose oral folate along with B6 and B12 in people with diabetic nephropathy - “A multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial (Diabetic Intervention with Vitamins to Improve Nephropathy [DIVINe]) at 5 university medical centers in Canada conducted between May 2001 and July 2007 of 238 participants who had type 1 or 2 diabetes and a clinical diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy.”

Patients in the trial were followed for up to 3 years AFTER the folate and B6 and B12 were stopped.

Vit D3 (cholecalciferol) and osteoporosis (risk of falls and fractures)

A recent report in JAMA (i) has highlighted a potential problem with very high dose oral cholecalciferol in elderly people - “A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 2256 community-dwelling women, aged 70 years or older, considered to be at high risk of fracture were recruited from June 2003 to June 2005 and were randomly assigned to receive cholecalciferol or placebo each autumn to winter for 3 to 5 years. The study concluded in 2008.”

The participants received a single oral dose of 500,000 IU of cholecalciferol or placebo.
